Skype and similarity of languages

November 23, 2007

Yesterday I was involved into a conversation between two people from Lithuania and Poland. During the 3 hours they were arguing about the similarity of Russian and Polish language. One of them was a citizen of Lithuania (guy) and another one was a citizen of Poland (girl). They have reached a deadlock in their argument and decided to call someone from Russia and check where he will be understand anything in Polish. By chance they’ve called me :) It was really funny. During the half an hour we were trying to here each other ‘cuz someone of them had a real problem with microphone. We couldn’t hear each other. When we could they were laughing because as they said I was speaking too fast and they could not understand anything. And of course I couldn’t understand them because of the quality of the sound. Finally we’ve managed to speak with the guy and he had say some words to me the girl wanted to check and I had try to guess what does it mean. I’ve managed to understand only one and simplest word. Then she started to cheat and give us the words that we couldn’t even pronounce correctly. The guy had to pronounce it to me and he couldn’t :) It was something. So I don’t know weather it is true about that Russian and Polish languages has 60% similarity or not but I believe that I won’t understand someone from this country.

Planet XXL

September 13, 2007

About a week ago a had a task at my english courses - to write the first and the last paragraph of a science-fiction story entitled “Planet XXL”. Firtsly I was trying to decide what this abbreviation will mean in the context of my story, but later I decided not to worry about it. Here’s the result.

Planet XXL

It was honorary 13th graduation of the Star Academy. Well-disposed rows of cadets in sparkling uniform were standing with high raised chins and afraid to move, listening to the speech of the Star Federation President. John, the best cadet of Academy, was standing in the front row, confidently cuddling a blaster to his hip and staring without blinking at the president’s eyes. At the moment their eyes had met and John suddenly realized - the time of the games is in the past now and the time of decisive actions was coming. Actions in fight against enemies of Federation. And John felt he was ready.

…..

And now, motionlessly lying on the ground with detonator in his half-broken arm thousands light years away from home, John felt how slowly his life was leaving his body. He wasn’t afraid to die. He was ready to sacrifice his life for the Federation since that moment when he was
standing infront of the president’s eyes during graduation ceremony. He was very proud of Federation commited him to be the first human coming to this planet. He knew that hundreds of space ship were headed toward the Planet XXL to found there the main outpost of intergalactic fight. But he was the first. He was a hero.
