I’ve calculated my scores for one-week time-logging experiment. Here you are:
Mon 21, 2008: spent at work - 565 min, spent working - 345 min, productivity - 61%
Tue 15,2008: spent at work - 555 min, spent working - 417 min, productivity - 75%
Wed 16,2008: spent at work - 541 min, spent working - 332 min, productivity - 61%
Thu 17, 2008: spent at work - 615 min, spent working - 393 min, productivity - 63%
Fri 18, 2008: spent at work - 563 min, spent working - 503 min, productivity - 89%
Note: Time I spent at work also includes a lunch time. The non-productive activity consists of having a rest and spending a time sitting infront of computer (mail, blogs, IMs).
This week I will continue my experiment but I’ll try to reduce it’s calculation part because it’s not very interesting waste my time sitting and summarizing all these numbers.

Tomorrow I’ll finish the first week of the time-logging experiment I mentioned in my
previous post. Today I’ve tried to take a look at my notes and to calculate a percentage for a first 4 days. And it’s really not a simple task as I might expect. The problem is during the last week I was making my notes in my google notebook and almost all of my records look like this:
9.15 -’ve finished this task. let’s have a rest9.23 - I’m here. ready to workIt was funny to make the records this way but it’s not funny at all to manage them. I’m lucky that I have no more than 20 records each day but nevertheless it’s quite difficult to group records to mike them look like:
9.15 - 9.23 - breakSo I decided to postpone this difficult calculation task and instead of doing that decided to look for online services providing such functionality. Google gave me some links and I’ve found several suitable tools. Links are below:
http://www.14dayz.comhttp://www.toadtime.comhttp://www.toggl.comhttp://www.myhours.comThe last one I find the most suitable for me but I need something much more simplier. I don’t need all these costs of tasks, I don’t need any project gradation. I just need to divide all my tasks into 3 categories: work (when I’m doing some project-related tasks, it’s a green light), rest (when I’m really have a rest without sitting infront of my computer, it’s a yellow light) and “prohibited” activity (like chatting, web-serfing, etc, it’s a red light). And the program should calculate the percentage of all these groups of tasks and show the results. That’s all I need. Honestly, it’s not all I need and of course I have some ideas how such service can be extended but I won’t write them here

Let’s keep it secret.
Tomorrow I’ll calculate my results. Really interesting for me.

A few hours in the evening I spend here -
http://www.stevepavlina.com. Very interesting articles about motivation, personal development, etc. Exactly what I’m interested in now.
Today was my first day when I was logging my working hours according to
this methodology. At was easy for me, because last two weeks I don’t use ICQ (the most distractive thing, where the most of my contacts live) at work and I almost don’t have any factors wich distract me from the work. It’s too early now to talk about any results of the experiment, but time will show

1300 meters in the swimming pool, turtle is fed and sitting satisfied in his tank, cold weather and no particular plans for tomorrow - that’s what I really need - a quiet week-end at home.

I really hate Eclipse with all its plugins, imports between plugins, dependencies, etc. Why should I spend hours setting up all these references and imports instead of doing task I have to do?

Yesterday I found a very nice service for online mind-mapping - http://bubbl.us. Looks very handy. And authors of this resource are former citizens of Russia (they have a russian names at least). So lets try it out.

These days we were hard thinking about what to buy as a new year gift to my wife. At first we wanted to buy simple pda with VGA screen (we have chosen acer n321). But I have one (FS Loox 720) already and buying another one wouldn’t be a very wise decision. Finally (today) we’ve bought an internet tablet nokia n800. I didn’t have a chance to play with it because it’s charging now, but at the first glance I find it great

These two weeks I’m using Ubuntu on my home PC. As a result of my experiments with hardware my windows installation has died and I’m not going to reinstall it again. At these time I’ve found everything I need for convenient work with Ubuntu. Probably it’s because I use a quite shirt list of software on regular basis. For daily work I need:
- web-browser - Firefox
- instant messengers - gajim & skype. I don’t like Pidgin’s appearance in linux. I use ICQ via jabber transport and it doesn’t matter for me that I don’t get any offline messages
- mind-mapping - freemind. There are some problems with compatibility of file versions between my current freemind 0.8.0 for linux and freemind 0.9.0 beta 13 for windows. I’m working on this problem
- ipodding - standard ubuntu media player supports iPod, but I’ve experienced some problems with available space on device after files deletion, but in general I believe it won’t be a big problem
- programming - jdk, netbeans. No comments. Everything works good. I have one problem with tray support on jdk6, but I think this problem is related with some packages I need to have. Also I need to find some stuff for php-development (apache, mysql, php)
- dictionary - standard online dictionary
- graphics - gimp & picasa
That’s all I need.
