Ubuntu again

December 28, 2007

Since the day before yesterday I live with Ubuntu installed on my home PC. I’ve even managed to install java and NetBeans :) so I think I’ll try continue this experiment. Now I need to install FreeMind and my life will be very comfrtable… I hope at least. Also these two days I didn’t use ICQ during the working day and I like it :)

Some resources

December 24, 2007

Last week I found a very interesting resource with it-related news and topics - http://habrahabr.ru. I’ve subscribed on rss and flicking through it regularly. It reminds me slashdot.org which I read more rarely. And the second (the third) resource I want to mention here is it-podcasting in russian language - http://radio-t.com. I’ve downloaded about 10 podcasts already and I think it’s quite interesting and sometimes funny. I can share what I have.

Hurray! Here comes VocRecaptor v1.4

December 23, 2007

Here you are. VocRecaptor v1.4 is published today.

What’s now:

  • When you start words editor program will inform you if the dictionary file is not set
  • Now you can learn the word just making a click on recap window

I didn’t want to wait any longer and decided to make a release as soon as possible - today :) This means that I will have to release an additional intermediate version (v1.5) before version with exercises will be released.

Some changes on VocRecaptor web-site

December 22, 2007

I’ve uploaded some changes on VocRecaptor web-site:

  • added additional contact information
  • corrected some mistakes

The next version (v1.4) of program will be uploaded very soon.

Opera-mini bookmarks RMS format

December 18, 2007

What if I’ll write here about a tricky tasks I’m doing at work?

For example, now I’m trying to discover a format which opera-mini uses for storing it’s speed-dial bookmarks in RMS. I cannot find the description of this format. Nobody has given me any hint (I’ve asked here and here). The only solution I see is to decompile binary files (if it is possible to decompile obfuscated binaries) or just guess what is the format :)

To be continued…

Privacy and wasting of time in the Internet

December 14, 2007

These days I’m thinking a lot about my presence in the Internet. There is a quite big list of web-sites where I am registered. I mean social networks, blogs, forums and so on. Anyone can find out who am I just typing my name or nickname in google and it will show what I look like, which music I like, which sites I visit often and so on. Do I need to have all this information shared with those people who I’m not familiar with even? I don’t think so. So since this time I’m going to reduce my presence in the Internet. Of course, it’s impossible to delete all the information about me but I won’t post any private information, thoughts anymore. Moreover I’m wasting many hours monthly just sitting in such sites aimlessly when I can use this time for something more useful and interesting (my projects, career, reading or improving my english for example).

Documentation is like a sex…

December 12, 2007

…when it is good, it is very, very good; and when it is bad, it is better than nothing.
- Dick Brandon

How it’s nice to see such comments in source files of famous and stable library:

// get the screen dimensions:
// this is a bit complicated, since Nokia’s FullCanvas fucks
// up when calling super.getHeight(), so we need to use hardcoded values…

This is the first sign which means that I’ll have to go deep inside into sources in order to make it work or at least to understand how it works.
It’s from j2me polish Screen class.

What’s going on in the world of VocRecaptor

December 11, 2007

Just a minute ago I’ve finished a rearrangement of my big VocRecaptor mindmap. It’s not a secret that I’m using mind maps for different purposes from writing out my thoughts to making a different plans (including plans for this project).
So now VocRecaptor’s map is properly synchronized with current program state (yes, I was implementing without proper documenting and some features were implemented or were written in some papers). Now here is all right.
In a month (or even earlier) I’ll release the next version (1.4) which will allow you (and it now allows me, because I’m the first and the only user of this version) to learn words and perform some other operations with dictionary.
And after that I’ll start working on the next really extended version which will allow to make exercises, edit your dictionary and so on.
And at the same time I’ll start some sub-projects of VocRecaptor but I’m not going to unveil all my secrets right now.
Cheers.

Improvement

December 11, 2007

With such project I’ll be a guru of j2me, Polish and Informa soon :))) On the one hand it is very interesting to find out the ways of using such limited libraries for our task. But on the other hand there are some alternatives which we can use, but don’t use because of some unknown reasons. Why should we find out tricky ways of polishing Polish (sounds great, I know) instead of using FlashLite for example? I think we will meet the bad side of this decision.

Positive emotions

December 6, 2007

The question of the few last days - what can I get positive emotions from? I’m feeling so boring and tired again and don’t get any kind of joy from my work, from winter and people outside me. At first our project was really interesting but now during the last week or even more guys cannot settle design matters and we just sitting and waiting for something. We cannot perform certain tasks because it’s not known what will look like the system we do (we don’t have design). At the same time I have several investigation tasks and therefore I cannot do some things interesting for me during my working day. Thats bad. Thats really bad especially because I have several ideas concerning VocRecaptor and the matter of success is the matter of time. But I don’t have these time. My evenings I spend switching from making homework for my courses to doing some home stuff. And sometimes I have an hour or more to think about my project. But I need more time.
Now I’m reading the Jack Canfield’s book about the positive thinking and success. I find all the methods he is describing really easy to apply to my life, but in the whole it hardly gives me all positive I need. But it help me to think and figure out what I want to achieve and when. My wife is also reading this book and it give us some results - a couple of days ago we sat down and made a plan (even with approximate dates) of our immigration process. And it’s really great because it was the first time we have spoken about it. Of course now we have a really huge list of urgent things we have to do beforehand but we can do it.
